I found this recipe for Homemade “Cream of” Soup from One Orange Giraffe on Pinterest a while back and found the idea very intriguing. I understood the benefit of making my own homemade version, as it would contain actual real food ingredients, no preservatives and would not contain extra salt or aluminum. It has been a slow process for me on this road to eating whole foods. I take one step at a time, one idea at a time. I loved this idea and knew that one day, when I was ready, I would just have to try it.
I tried it and I loved it! What’s better is that my kids loved it too. I tweaked a few of the ingredients to make it a little more “whole foods” friendly. The final product was way more flavorful than any “Can of ….” I have ever tried. I will never go back.
Homemade Cream of Soup Mix
- 2 cup organic non-fat dry milk
- 2 1/2 cup arrowroot powder
- 1/2 cup organic vegetable broth powder
- 1/4 cup freeze dried onions
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 2 tsp dried thyme
- 2 tsp cracked black pepper
- 1.) Mix all the dry ingredients together and store in fridge in air tight container.
- 2.) To use, boil 1 1/4 cup water. When boiling, turn off heat source and whisk in 1/3 cup dry soup mix.
- 3.) This is the equivelent of one can of "Cream Of" soup.
- 4.) For Cream of Chicken add bits of chicken to the mix while cooking or chopped mushrooms for Cream of Mushroom. Add celery for cream of celery. This is a very flexible recipe that can be altered to fit your needs.

I love making homemade basics! For me, there is a sense of pride in it on so many levels. Thanks for sharing at Thriving Thursday 🙂
I agree there is pride in the completed project knowing that you are saving your family money and providing optimal health! Thank you for hosting! 🙂
I like the idea of homemade — but sometimes find myself in a time (or energy) crunch so don’t always do it. This recipe sounds like a perfect solution — mix the dry ingredients ahead of time and just add water when needed! Thanks so much for sharing on Busy Monday!
Thank you so much! I have been wanting to try this, but was leary of just using any recipe. I like the fact that you have been using this for 2 years. That makes it a recipe I will try. I do have a question: I have not heard of the vegetable broth powder. Can you buy this in your everyday supermarket? And if not, what would be a good substitute?
I know I answered you on FB but we can double team it here as well 🙂 You can buy it at some super markets. You can also just substitute chicken broth powder if you like. I get an unsalted one myself. I buy mine from Vitacost.com. If you are interested I can get you a $10 off coupon through my refer a friend link!
