WORLD News Magazine: Fun Facts for Christian Kids!

I remember when I hit middle school age my mom began a subscription for me to, at the time, a popular Christian girl’s magazine.  I looked forward to that new issue that would show up in our mailbox each month. It was also something my parents felt they could trust because it came from a Christian publisher.

I recently received a set of magazines from WORLD News Group, and was asked to take a look. I am fairly picky about what my children read so I dug in and read all the articles myself so that I could share with you my honest and thorough opinion.

There is a different magazine for each age group, Pre-School/ Kindergarten, Elementary, and Middle School/ High School ages.  Each magazine is written on an appropriate age level sharing interesting information from around the world on various topics that both boys and girls will find engaging.

WORLDteen Magazine

As I opened up the pages to the magazine meant for middle schoolers and high schoolers alike, I was encouraged to find a little something for everyone. I even learned a few things too!

In the WORLDteen Magazine September/ October 2015 issue everything was covered from history to science, fashion to the importance of conservation, and both international and stateside events.  There was a world map included and a quiz at the end. I enjoyed reading through the fun facts spread throughout.

Most of the articles contained scripture and brought the conversation to a God-centered summation. 

I really enjoyed the fact that there were so many articles focusing on education concerning other cultures. I think that is very important, and a great conversation starter for parents and children about missions and evangelism.

WORLDkids

WORLDkids Magazine is perfect for your elementary ages, 1st grade and up.  The WORLDteen and WORLDkids seem to have some crossover information but each is written for the audience it is intended for.  I found one article particularly amusing. I am from East Tennessee. I don’t live there anymore but I still have a pretty thick accent.  I knew people with a lot thicker accents growing up. My Midwestern-born husband is very quick to point out the times my accent gets thicker, such as when I am on the phone with my mom, or when I pull out Southern-speech.

There was a full article in WORLDkids on how those living in the Appalachia region are learning in school both how to speak, read, write proper English grammar, but also learning the history of their native language.  Yes, in some cases, we could call Southern-speak its own language I believe, sort of like Ebonics. It ends saying “They are learning an important lesson. They don’t have to be ashamed of their home.”  I wasn’t particularly ashamed before, but I have been told that Southern accents are either cute or make you sound unintelligent. As I said, I found the article amusing.

The WORLDkids magazine is chalk full of fun images, interesting stories that would appeal to both boys and girls alike.  There were articles that featured outdoor  sports, historical figures, science and conservation efforts. There was a quiz and even a puzzle activity. A world map was included inside.  It was fun to read through, and again, I learned a few things myself!

God’s BIG World

I thought that the Pre-School/ Kindergarten subscription to this magazine had even more Scripture than the others, or at least it was more prominently placed.  The print is larger for young readers. My seven year old enjoyed looking at this one as well because she could fully read it on her own.  The pages are very colorful and the topics are fun including, arts, crafts and animals. There are a lot more activities in this one as well for the kids to do.  

On the whole, all the information included is very educational.  We learned about flamingos with prosthetic legs. There was an article on the instrument, a harpsichord as well as brown bats. My children loved looking at all the pictures and learning the fun facts.

Would I buy a subscription for my family?

We have smaller children. Our oldest daughter is 7 years old. I think I would just purchase the God’s Big WORLD for the ages I have because they all enjoyed that one and it was age appropriate for both reading level and learning.  I would definitely consider purchasing the other subscriptions as a sort of homeschool supplement as the kids get older. I think it would be fun to read through them together and form our own unit studies off of the various topics. My children love fun facts and these magazines had many of those!
