Richard Scarry's Busytown: Eye Found It! Board Game Review

We are always looking for new board games. Our children love them. We love them. It is a quick way to invest in a little family time at home without having to pay big bucks. Of course there are a few classics that we enjoy like Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders, but I want to share a few with you this week that we have really come to look forward to playing with the kids that might be unique to you.

Did you ever read Richard Scarry books growing up? I am totally dating myself, but I remember watching Richard Scarry’s Busytown Mysteries cartoon on days off from school while I was sick. I was one of those crazy kids who really enjoyed cartoons no matter how old she got. We now have the various seasons of the same cartoon on DVD for our own children to watch. When I found this Eye Found It Board Game, I just could not pass it up.

One very interesting thing about this board game is that it is all about teamwork. No one wins until everyone wins. I am all about training children in healthy competition, so please do not mistake me for one of those people, but I do like the teamwork aspect that this game provides.

Once you choose your characters you begin the game. The spinner has various options for making moves like any game, but the kids’ favorite is if the spinner lands on “Mystery Bug!” They all shout it out too and grab their little magnifying glasses. Mind you I have a 7 year old who adores playing this game, so it is not just for preschoolers.

What does Mystery Bug do? You grab a card, and on the one side is Mystery Bug and on the opposite side is an image of something on the board game as well as its name. This is great for sight word reading and image recognition for basic household items.

The children get so excited about finding the image on the board. As you find, let’s say the “wrench,” you put a little magnifying glass on top of it.

One other little exciting event that happens every so often in the Eye Found It Game is that Pig Will and Pig Won’t eat a little item from the picnic at the end. The goal is to not allow them to eat all of your picnic before you get there. My kids are so picky about what to take off the picnic blanket when we land on this one. They never want the kool-aid to be taken away. We have talked about healthy items to eat before so there is a health lesson that can be inserted there!

So the object of the game is for everyone to reach the ferry to go to the island. Now, because my children are competitive, of course, whoever reaches the ferry first proclaims very loudly that they did, but no one technically wins until we all make it to the picnic together. This teaches patience as one child waits for the others to catch up. The game also teaches teamwork in how all of the children help each other to find all the objects with their magnifying glasses. When one is done with her magnifying glasses she will then go to help the others use up all of their’s. They know that to win they all have to work together to get to the end.

The BusyTown Mysteries: Eye Found It board game really has become a family favorite and we play it often. I highly recommend it!

The game is very long and stretches across the floor as you can see in some of the pictures above. The flaps fold out and piece together like a puzzle. The flaps and game pieces are made of very sturdy cardboard. We have had this game for well over a year, played it multiple times and not one piece has broken. This is very important to me since we have small children who aren’t always careful.
