Spelt: A Wheat Alternative Review and GIVEAWAY! {Ends 9/28/15)

By Lindsey 5 Comments

We are not a gluten free family, but when I heard about Nature’s Legacy Spelt foods I was intrigued. I had heard of spelt but honestly had no idea what it was.  I have also had poor experiences in the past with alternatives to wheat and gluten free foods tasting less than appetizing, but I was excited to try Nature’s Legacy Spelt products to determine for myself and for YOU, whether or not Spelt was a good wheat alternative.

What is spelt? An alternative to wheat.

Spelt is an ancient wheat native to southern Europe and western Asia. It is not to be confused with common wheat, rye, barley, or even oats. It is part of the same grain family but an entirely different species. It is gaining quite the popularity as a health food in recent years and as a good alternative to common processed wheat.

According to Nature’s Legacy’s website …

Spelt contains a broad spectrum of nutrients, including complex carbohydrates, sugar, soluble and insoluble fiber, sodium, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and more. Spelt is high in vitamin B2, niacin, manganese, thiamin, copper, and magnesium. Because spelt is highly water soluble, these nutrients are easily absorbed by the body. In addition to being loaded with essential nutrients, Spelt is a good source of dietary fiber, which has been shown to lower total and LDL cholesterol levels. And it tastes great, too!

My Family Loves Spelt!

We received a box neatly packed from Purity Foods Inc. full of goodies for our pantry like Spelt Rotini and Spaghetti as well as PRETZELS! My kids call pretzels, “Princles”, so everyone was so excited to have their “Princels” for snack time. I would add the pretzels to a bowl with some almonds, cranberries, and a few chocolate chips for a fun trail mix type snack between homeschool lessons. The kids loved them! We tried both the sourdough and the regular pretzels. My favorite were the larger sourdough pretzels and the kids’ favorites were the smaller regular pretzels.

Would you like to know something strange about me? I don’t eat a lot of spaghetti. I don’t enjoy spaghetti noodles usually because texture-wise they tend to get overcooked most of the time. I enjoy more the rotini and penne when I cook pastas at home.  We tried the Nature’s Legacy Spelt Spaghetti Noodles and were pleasantly surprised. The spelt noodles cooked easily and quickly, but did not get overcooked.  They tasted just like regular spaghetti noodles.  I added our favorite spaghetti sauce and some chopped kale from our home garden and it was a simple, filling dinner for a busy week night.

Try Nature’s Legacy Spelt Rotini Noodles for a YUMMY homemade pasta salad!

I am a wife to a wonderful husband and mother to four beautiful children five and under: three girls and one boy. I am a disciple of Christ and I am fulfilling my role to my husband and family as a homemaker. I began The Road to 31 almost two years ago in an effort to focus more as I studied the Word of God and researched those things which were important to me. I found that God used The Road to 31 within my own life to bring community to my front door and allowed me to minister and be ministered to by other women who are walking along the same road as I.

I’d like to use the Non-Organic Whole Grain Spelt Flour to make bread in our bread machine!

We would LUV a whole grain spelt rotini pasta salad - the nutty flavor would make it perfect to add some fall veggies and nutes along with regular pasta ingredients, and use a nice oil like walnut!
