The trees are blooming and the birds are chirping, which could only mean one thing, it’s spring.
If you’re like our family, your event calendar is full and your to do list is a mile long, and you wonder how to stretch your dollars further this season.
As you prepare for fun in the sun and those special occasions, may these frugal words of wisdom help you enjoy this season without financial burden.
1.) Ask for a trial membership to a bulk store, like Costco.
Last year we bit the bullet and bought a membership to Costco, not realizing all of the benefits of a membership, and it has been a huge money saver for us!
But what if a membership isn’t in your budget right now? You can ask for a trial membership and enjoy member benefits for 30 days.
In the meantime, make a list of your necessities, and enjoy buying in bulk for your spring party or gathering while you can.
2.) Be a frugal gift giver.
With graduations, weddings, and parties around the corner, it’s important to any budget-conscious shopper to gift something wonderful, but frugal.
Stock up on gifts throughout the year as you find them on sale or clearance, even if you don’t know who you’ll gift it to yet. Then you can shop from your gift closet and not pay full retail price.
Visit The Secret to Giving Frugal and Fabulous Gifts for an arsenal of frugal gift giving ideas.
3.) Hit the clearance racks for winter and fall clothes.
Stock up now on winter and fall clothes, and save BIG money. I saved a ton of money at Target recently, finding long-sleeve shirts for $1.80! When fall rolls around, you’ll have a nice stash of clothes to keep your kids warm and have extra money in your pocketbook.
4.) Use a Groupon or Living Social coupons.
It seems I am opening my wallet a lot these days for items such as home maintenance, lawn care, pedicures, air conditioning services and more, but Groupon and Living Social have saved the day! When purchasing for a service, you can get deeply discounted services and products, plus find new companies you love at a lower price.
5.) Make your own cleaning products.
Making my own cleaning products has been a blessing in more ways than one. I am avoiding my family’s contact with harsh chemicals, while saving money, too.

6.) Gather outgrown kids clothes, toys, and shoes to sell.
It’s amazing how quickly children outgrow toys and clothes, but it can work to your advantage! Find a local kids consignment store and take your best items neat and clean, and ready to sell. The money you make will allow you to get “new” items for free! The last time I sold at consignment, I made $50, which paid for Easter outfits, basket goodies, and spring clothes. Score!

7.) Shop the Dollar Tree for a variety of items.
The Dollar Tree can be a huge source for savings if you know what to buy. My favorite deals for spring include outside toys (pails, balls, chalk, etc), tableware (festive plates, napkins, and tablecloths), gift bags, and cards.
8.) Restore what you have.
For the past few seasons I’ve dreamed of a new patio set since our metal one is old and rusted. It’s simply not in our budget, so I am getting creative and breathing new life into it.
Restoring and re-purposing what you already have will not only save you money, but makes you feel like you’ve just purchased something new.
9.) Propagate your garden.
Staring a garden can be pricey, but propagating, taking a section from your friend’s plants and using those as your garden starter, is a budget friendly way to enjoy your green thumb.

10.) Save money on groceries.
Outside of our mortgage, food is the next largest expense in our home. But cutting and stretching your food budget doesn’t have to be painful!
You can easily save money on food by adhering to these four frugal tips:
- Eat only in season fruits and veggies when they are on sale.
- Stretch your meat budget by supplementing with another protein source, such as beans.
- Cook once and eat twice by eating or freezing your leftovers.
- Eat at home.
